The Electrical and Controls Specialist, focusses on PLC and Control Systems, and is a critical asset in our pursuit of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, with a primary focus on upgrading and enhancing all equipment utilized in gypsum board manufacturing. Reporting to the Maintenance Manager, this role ensures that our processes are efficient, reliable, and technologically advanced, aligning with the mission, values, and objectives of CertainTeed. The Electrical and Controls Specialist will also support the plant and company strategic initiatives including capital projects that involve electrical process control systems and provide leadership in the implementation and support of plant automation, electrical and database systems.
- Reports directly to the Maintenance Manager
- Implement necessary updates and improvements to automation systems to prevent technical obsolescence and maintain optimal performance. This includes programing and staying current with industry best practices and emerging technologies.
- Supports the plant providing guidance and support in addressing complex troubleshooting issues, including emergencies outside regular working hours.
- Provide technical expertise and support in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and enhancement of automation-related systems, including but not limited to PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, Servo Motors, Servo Drives, instrumentation, and data/voice networks.
- Utilizes advanced tools and techniques to improve the reliability of our control systems.
- Manages work orders, procures necessary parts, and prioritizes work orders within SAP.
- Assumes responsibility for electrical work within the facility, including dealing with trade electricians and contractors for Low Voltage and High Voltage.
- Schedules and oversees projects, including the preparation of capital expenditure plans.
- Identifying new opportunities and solutions with cost / benefit analysis and making recommendations to improve efficiencies.
- Plans, evaluates, organizes, and executes automation and controls-related projects and initiatives
- Provides training for operators and maintenance personnel.
- Assures good housekeeping practices following 5S systems, enforces plant rules and safety regulations, and supports WCM initiatives.
- Travel to other plants when needed.

What do you bring?
- Instrumentation and Controls Technician
- Three to Five (3-5) years of applied professional experience in Electrical, Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) / PLC.
- Expertise in integrated automation and information systems in a manufacturing environment.
- Specialize in programming and troubleshooting PLCs from various manufacturers.
Working conditions
- Works within a manufacturing plant environment, including but not limited to concrete floors, exposure to industrial noise, dust, chemicals, and temperature fluctuations.
- Monday to Friday Day shift. However, plant operation is 24/7 and you may be required to work outside of your regular hours from time to time
- The role may require occasional travel
Physical demand
Job may require long periods of sitting, walking, standing, working on a computer, or engaging in telephone conversation. Must be capable of wearing personal protective equipment necessary to comply with government and company safety standards whenever engineered methods of reducing hazards or physical requirements cannot be reasonably accommodated.
